It Gets Better

“It only gets better. College is better than high school, and post-college is better than college. Your thirties are better than your twenties, and each year of marriage and parenting are sweeter and smoother, richer and deeper than the last.” -Shanuna Niequist

Isn’t that the most encouraging thing? Notice that she doesn’t say that life gets easier as we age…just sweeter and smoother, richer and deeper. I love that. There is more in store.

[This photo makes me think of Ireland, where I will be in six short months. I CAN'T WAIT.]

Biking Across the Country

Last week, I interviewed these two friends–Zach and Thomas–who are biking across the country to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

They have called themselves R.I.S.E. — Revolution Inspired by Self Evolution. And their creed is this — “Creativity, compassion, community, & collaboration will always rise above competition.” How incredible is that?

As we sat in the Blue Moon and talked over our styrofoam coffee cups, I was so moved by their mission and their huge hearts. Both of them have lost brothers to suicide and although they know it’s a rough road, they are determined to share their stories and help others.

They began their ride in March at the Golden Gate Bridge and will conclude, more than 7,000 miles and 7 months later, in New York City. They will visit more than 110 cities and talk with schools, suicide prevention groups, friends and family along the way. What a ride! I was honored to meet them when they stopped in Hastings for a day.

One of the most powerful things they shared with me was the simple fact that they are living for the journey. They are living for each and every day, for every conversation and new friend they meet, for every town they roll through, for every energy drink, every high school assembly, every thunderstorm, every cup of coffee. They are not looking to make headlines or history, but simply to share their hearts. They left behind their jobs and friends in Scottsdale, Arizona to meet the long and open road, and they have done so with courage.

Be sure to check out their route, read their story and follow their blog.

The Art of Creating

Today, a friend of mine gave a presentation that showed his investment in the art of creating something with one’s hands. Andrew has been making homemade soaps for two years and he shared the process with us today. His inspiration for soap making came from the  natural beauty he experienced in Cuzco, Peru, where he studdied abroad. The process involves a mix of colors and oils and natural ingredients, plus a lot of hard work, time and dedication.

Today, he spoke on the value of creating and how important it is for us humans to produce things with our hands. It is what we were created to do, and I absolutely agree.

I love the way he acknowledged the inner need we all feel to use our gifts for good and affirm the creation we are blessed with.

It reminds me of this quote from one of my favorite writers, Shauna Niequist:

“We create because we were made to create, having been made in the image of God, whose first role was Creator. He was and is a million different things, but in the beginning, He was a creator. That means something for us, I think. We were made to be the things that He is: forgivers, redeemers, second chance-givers, truth-tellers, hope-bringers. And we were certainly, absolutely, made to be creators.”

This is a video I made for Andrew and his soap making business here in Hastings: Pacha Handmade Soaps. You can also check out his presentation here.

Live Music

A few weekends ago, I went to a concert here in Hastings given by a group of bluegrass artists–Finnders and Youngberg. And they were fantastic! Their sound was so sweet–guitars strumming, banjos dancing and voices harmonizing. There is a whole series in town called The Listening Room, and they are all about keeping live music alive, which is so cool. I also wrote an article about the evening and the project of keeping live acts afloat out here on the plains. Good stuff.

My Current State of Mind…

…can be summed up in this, which I found in an essay by a former student in my morning class today:

“He thirsts to learn, so he learns; he thirsts to

live, so he lives.”

The Start of the Week

Sunday (yesterday) afternoon was sunny and beautiful and I was suddenly so eager for spring to come. I am so excited for slow, warm, spring and summer afternoons…many of which will be spent on this porch. The busy-ness of life these days makes me grateful for times of repose at the end of the day. Times when I get to take a deep breath and appreciate the day.

Wednesday Wisdom

“Life with God at its core is about giving your life up to something bigger and more powerful. It’s about saying at every turn that God knows better than we know, and that his Spirit will lead us in way that we couldn’t have predicted.”

-Shauna Niequist, Cold Tangerines
